Artane is a brand name of a drug a commonly known as Trihexyphenidyl used to treat Parkinson’s disease. This medication is available in the form of tablets as well as elixirs. Artane belongs to the group of drugs called Anticholinergics; ingredients that interfere with Acetylcholine.
How It Works
Acetylcholine is a chemical found in the brain. It is also called a neurotransmitter as it aids in carrying messages from one brain cell to another. Your body requires a balance between Acetylcholine and Dopamine; another neurotransmitter for the control of muscle movement. The Dopamine level of persons taking anti-psychotic medication usually decreases. Artane works by impeding the effects of Acetylcholine to maintain the balance between Dopamine and Acetylcholine.
Poor muscle control in persons with Parkinson’s disease is what Artane is prescribed to treat. It is also used to treat side effects such as muscle stiffness and spasms caused by the intake of anti-psychotic medication.
Follow the exact directions given by your doctor when taking Artane. Use the given measuring cup or spoon to get the correct dose.
The starting dose for adults with Parkinson’s disease is 1 mg per day. Increments of 2 mg can be made within 3 to 5 days. 6 to 10 mg is the usual daily dosage thereafter.
For children between 2 to 17 years of age, the initial dose is 0.1 or 0.2 mg/kg per day. It has to be given in 3 divided doses for a week. In the second week, the dose can be increased up to 0.05 to 0.3 mg/kg per day. The maximum daily dose that can be given to a child is 0.75 mg/kg.
