Avalide is a combination treatment of hydrochlorothiazide and irbesartan used to manage hypertension in adults.

How It Works

Avalide is a combination treatment with two active ingredients, hydrochlorothiazide and irbesartan.

Irbesartan belongs to a group of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Irbesartan blocks the effects of angiotensin, which is a chemical produced by the body that causes blood vessels to narrow. Irbesartan can cause blood vessels to relax and allow blood to pass through at a lowered pressure. The lower blood pressure also alleviates the workload on the heart.

Hydrochlorothiazide thiazide is a diuretic, sometimes called a water pill. This drug cases urination, which is important to keep the body from absorbing salts like potassium in excessive amounts.

Excessive salt in the body, which can be caused when taking hypertension drugs like Irbesartan, leads to fluid retention and swelling in parts of the body.

Avalide is used to relieve high blood pressure without the risk of causing high potassium levels in the blood. Avalide can reduce the risk of heart failure, kidney failure or stroke in adults suffering from high blood pressure.

Your doctor will prescribe you the right dosage of Avalide considering your condition, response to treatment and medical history.

Take Avalide exactly as the doctor prescribes. Do not take doses in higher or lower amounts than prescribed. Do not suddenly stop taking Avalide either. Deviating from prescription instructions may cause your condition to get worse.

Read the patient information leaflet provided with the packaging before taking your first dose of Avalide.

Avalide is usually prescribed to be taken one time each day. Take the medication the same time each day to remember your doses.

Do not take this medication at bedtime because Avalide will make you want to urinate more. It’s recommended to take the daily dose at least 4 hours before going to bed. Doing so will prevent you from having to interrupt sleep to go to the bathroom.

You can take Avalide with or without food, or as instructed by your doctor.

When taking drugs to reduce cholesterol levels along with Avalide, take these drugs either 4 hours before taking Avalide or 4 to 6 after taking Avalide.
