Cefixime is an antibacterial entity that is also a semisynthetic cephalosporin. Cefixime is available in forms of 100mg, 200mg, and 400mg.
How It Works
Cefixime performs much like other cephalosporins. Cefixime targets the cell walls of bacteria. Cell walls form a structural and protective role in bacteria. This makes it quite integral for the existence of various types of bacteria. Cefixime causes the link holding the cell walls together to fray. This, in turn, causes the presence of spaces in the cell walls. As this is not a conducive state for the bacteria, they soon die off, causing the infection to go away.
Cefixime is a broad spectrum antibiotic and can be used to dispel a large array of infections and problems that are caused by bacteria.
Cefixime should only be proposed to you by a trained physician. The exact amount of Cefixime that you will need to ingest is determined by the strain of bacteria that is infecting you. After the identification of the bacteria has taken place, you will be expected to take a specific measure of Cefixime to overcome the symptoms. At no point should the therapy involving Cefixime be halted unless a clinician has deemed it necessary. Stopping ahead of the schedule may not satisfactorily get rid of the infection.
Children will need to take either the chewable form of Cefixime or the liquid form. Here, they will need to consume about 8mg per every kilo that they weigh. This is for the single dose. If they are to take two doses, each measure should be reduced to about 4mg per kilo. This is meant for children who weigh less than 45 kilos.
Adults will take the regular form of Cefixime. The most common quantity is 400mg, usually taken once a day. This may be reduced to 200mg and taken two times within the day.
It is quite normal to experience some of the negative consequences of taking Cefixime. Here is what you may undergo:
Excess of gas in the stomach
Feeling of fullness
Hives on the skin
Discomfort when engaging in sexual intercourse
An irritation of the skin near the genitals
An upset stomach
Abnormal discharge from the vagina
White splotches in the oral cavity
It is not unusual to have these experiences when you first ingest Cefixime. As your body acclimatizes to the medication, however, these may cease to be an issue. If this does not dissipate naturally, you may be required to get a medical consultation.
Cefixime is not suited to individuals who are allergic to one of the Cefixime ingredients or to cephalosporins.
This is important information that your healthcare specialist should be notified about:
Any stomach or bowel issues at all
Conditions related to your kidneys or if your kidneys are failing
Excessive hypersensitivity to penicillin or beta-lactam antibiotic
Will be given or has already received a live typhoid vaccine or BCG vaccine
You should inform your attending physician if you are either breastfeeding or pregnant. It may or may not be acceptable for you to ingest Cefixime during this period.
