Entocort is a drug prescribed to treat certain medical conditions affecting the bowel.

How It Works

The main active ingredient in Entocort is budesonide, a synthetic version of the corticosteroid hormones naturally produced in the body. Corticosteroid hormones regulate how the immune system responds to foreign substances that can lead to symptoms such as inflammation and coughing. Budesonide act as an anti-inflammatory agent that can reduce inflammation and other symptoms caused by natural immune response.

Entocort is prescribed to treat bowel conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. These diseases are marked by symptoms such as painful inflammation in the organs. Entocort does not “cure” these symptoms. But the drug can relieve symptoms of bowel diseases like diarrhea and pain.

The active ingredient in Entocort, budesonide, is also known as a common allergy medication. Entocort, however, is not used to treat allergic problems. Use another budesonide containing medication specifically intended to treat allergies for those conditions.

Dosage of Entocort will vary depending on your condition, severity of the condition and recommendation by the prescribing doctor.

Take Entocort exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less of the drug as it will not properly treat the condition. Taking higher doses of Entocort may lead to harmful side effects.

Carefully read the patient information leaflet provided before starting your dosage schedule.

Entocort pills should be swallowed by the mouth once daily. It’s usually prescribed to be taken in the morning. You can take Entocort with or without food, or as explicitly instructed by a physician.

Swallow Entocort pills whole. Do not crush, break or chew the tablets. Broken tablets release the full dose of the drug, exacerbating side effects.

Do not split or break the extended release version of Entocort tablets.

Take the medication only as long as the doctor has prescribed it for. Do not use for a longer period than instructed. Doing so may cause harmful health effects.

Side Effects

Entocort causes fewer side effects than other drugs because the medication functions in the gut. However, it may cause one or more of the side effects listed below:

If side effects get worse or persist for more than three days, immediately call your doctor.

Do not take Entocort if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the drug.

Seek medical advice before taking Entocort if pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask your doctor if Entocort is safe to take when planning to get pregnant.

Some prior medical conditions may make Entocort unsafe to use. Inform your doctor if you have a history of any of the following medical conditions: eye diseases like glaucoma or cataracts, high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, thyroid problems, problems in the stomach or intestines like ulcers, osteoporosis, and bleeding issues, mood problems like psychosis or anxiety, and infections like tuberculoses or herpes.

It’s recommended not to consume grapefruit or any food containing grapefruit when taking Entocort. Grapefruit may increase the dosage of Entocort in the body increasing your vulnerability to side effects.

Do not suddenly stop taking Entocort. The condition you are being treated for might get worse. Some patients also experience withdrawal symptoms when Entocort dosages are abruptly halted.
