Nasonex nasal spray is used to relieve symptoms or seasonal or annual allergic reactions.

How It Works

Nasonex nasal spray contains a steroid called mometasone. This steroid can suppress the immune response produced by the body in reaction to certain foreign agents such as pollen, dust, viruses or other substances. The immune response causes you to experience problems like inflammation, sneezing or watery eyes. Nasonex nasal spray can relieve these symptoms by reducing the natural reactive agents released by the immune system.

Nasonex nasal spray is commonly used to treat symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose or coughing caused by allergies that occur seasonally or all year round. Nasonex is only prescribed for individuals over the age of 12.

In adults, Nasonex nasal spray may also be used to treat nasal polyps, or prevent the reemergence of nasal polyps soon following surgery to remove them. The steroid in Nasonex can also reduce swelling. Therefore, this medication may be recommended to reduce inflammation of the nasal passageways as caused by conditions such as sinusitis. Doctors prescribe Nasonex with an antibiotic if the swelling is caused by a bacterial infection.

Nasonex nasal spray is available in 50mcg doses per nostril. The spray is usually recommended to be used twice a day for allergies for a maximum daily dose of 200mcg for both nostrils.

Dosage of Nasonex will vary depending on physician’s recommendation. Age and the condition being treated may call for different strengths of dosage.

Take Nasonex only as prescribed by the doctor. Follow dosage instructions carefully and stick to the schedule as recommended by the prescribing physician.

Use the spray same time each day to remember the schedule. Do not double dose to make up for missed doses.

You may not notice the effects of Nasonex right away. In some cases it takes up to two weeks for the effects of the medications to be noticeable. Regardless, it’s important to stick to the prescribed schedule without stopping or missing doses.

To use the spraying device, follow the instructions provided in the patient information leaflet that accompanies the packaging. If any of the instructions are unclear, ask your pharmacist or doctor for clarification.
