Pariet is a drug prescribed for ulcers and acid reflux, which are common stomach and esophagus problems. This medication is also known as Rabeprazole.
How it works
Pariet belongs to a group of medications identified as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). These inhibitors work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
Pariet is mainly used to treat common stomach and esophagus problems such as ulcer and acid reflux. It is also useful in relieving certain symptoms such as persistent cough, difficulty swallowing and heartburn.
If you are taking this medication in tablet form, take it by mouth, with or without food. Pariet is generally taken once or twice a day. When consuming the tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water. Do not split, chew or crush the tablet. Doing so can release the entire drug inside your mouth at once. This will increase the chances of getting affected by side effects.
If you are consuming the medication in capsule form, take it daily once, by mouth. You must take your dose 30 minutes before your meal. Do not swallow the capsule. You must open the capsule and scatter the contents on a small amount soft food such as applesauce. Once you prepare this mixture, you need to swallow it within 15 minutes.
The dosage and the dose schedule will be determined by your doctor according to a number of factors. These include your medical complaint, age, weight and response to the treatment. If you are consuming any anti-acids for your condition, do not take them along with this Pariet. It is best to consume Pariet at least 30 minutes before you consume the anti-acids.
In order to benefit from this drug, you need to consume it as regularly as possible. Therefore, do not skip or miss your doses under any circumstances. If you keep forgetting your doses, take them at the same time every day. This will help you remember.
During the treatment period, you will experience some headaches. Even though these do not stay for long, inform your physician if these headaches get worse.
Consuming this medication can also lead to low blood magnesium levels. Common symptoms of this condition are irregular heartbeats, seizures and persistent muscle spasms.
This medication can sometimes cause a severe intestinal infection due to a certain type of bacteria. Inform your physician if you develop persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain and mucus in your stool.
Although unlikely, it is possible for you get an allergic reaction to this medication as well. At the event of such conditions, get immediate medical help.
