How it works
This drug belongs to a group of medications known as Proton Pump Inhibitors. These medications work by affecting the level of acid your stomach produces.
Prilosec is mainly used to treat esophagus and stomach issues such as acid reflux and ulcers. It is also useful in relieving symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing and persistent cough.
This drug is only consumed once daily, by mouth, before meals. Your dosage and length of treatment will be determined by your physician according to your medical condition and the way you respond to the treatment. For children, the dose will be based on weight. You must not make any changes to the dose or dose schedule without consulting your physician.
When consuming this medication, make sure to swallow it whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet. If you are taking any anti-acids along with this drug, do not take them together. Take this medication at least 30 minutes before you take the anti-acids.
You must take this drug regularly in order to benefit from it. If you keep forgetting your doses, take them at the same time every day. This will help you remember. You must take this medication for the prescribed length of time, even if you start to feel better. You must not take this medication for more than 14 days unless your physician tells you otherwise.

During the treatment period, you are likely to experience certain side effects such as headaches and abdominal pain. Even though these conditions are temporary, contact your doctor if they get worse with time.
You may also experience symptoms of low blood magnesium levels during the course of the treatment. These symptoms include irregular heartbeats, persistent muscle spasms and seizures.
This medication can sometimes cause a severe intestinal condition as a result of a certain type of bacteria. Moreover, although unlikely, it is still possible for you to develop an allergic reaction to this medication.
