Seroquel or Quetiapine as it is generically known is an anti-psychotic (atypical) type drug that can be used in treating certain mood or mental conditions. This can be used for conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or sudden episode related with bipolar disorder like depression/ mania.
How It Works
Seroquel will help a patient to improve his/her concentration levels and decrease hallucinations by restoring the balance of certain kinds of natural substances called ‘Neurotransmitters’ in the brain. This medication allows a patient to think positively and clearly about themselves, let go of nervous feelings and operate in their normal day to day lives in a more active fashion. Aspects like appetite, sleep, mood and energy levels are also known to be improved by this medication.
With the use of Quetiapine, serious swings in your mood can be prevented and the frequency of your mood swings occurring can be decreased too. It can also be used to treat depression as well, when used in combination with other medicines.
Your medical conditions, response to treatments and other medications that you are currently using will factor in, when your physician is recommending you a proper dosage.
This medicine can be taken by mouth, generally 2 or 3 times daily with/without food. Use it once daily at bedtime, if it is to treat depression (connected to bipolar disorder). Your medical practitioner might start this medicine in a lower dose and increase it gradually in order avoid any unwanted side effects. Take them at the same time each day, so that you will not forget a dose.
Even if you feel well after a while keep using this for the prescribed amount of time and stop using it, only if your doctor says so. If there isn’t any significant improvement in your condition he/she should be duly informed.
Quetiapine may cause some weight gain and a blood cholesterol level rise, which might increase the risk of a heart disease development. It might also cause your blood sugar level to rise, which can result in a diabetes condition. It would be best to discuss about these benefits/risks with your doctor before using this drug.
If the following severe side effects occur, take the necessary medical attention promptly.
Minor side effects may include;
Vision getting blurred
Make sure to contact your doctor/pharmacist immediately if any of the above or any other effects not mentioned in this list occur.
Quetiapine or any other inactive ingredients in this medication might cause an allergic reaction in your body. So before taking it your pharmacist/doctor should be informed about these allergies or any other allergies that you might have.
If your medical history has liver disease, low white blood cell count, eye cataracts, thyroid problems, heart disease or high blood pressure, he/she will need to know about them as well. Do not perform tasks that require clear vision and alertness as this medication might cause blurred vision and drowsiness.
It may also affect ‘QT prolongation’ (rhythm of the heartbeat), which might result in serious irregular/ fast heartbeat, fainting and severe dizziness that will require immediate medical attention.
Consult your doctor before you plan to use Seroquel, if you are pregnant or breast feeding as it might cause unwanted effects in your unborn baby or infant.
