Tinidazole is an anti-parasitic drug. It mainly clears infection caused by a tiny, single-cell organisms called protozoa. Tinidazole can stop the growth and spread of protozoa and some types of bacteria in the body. This stops the spread of the infection, so the immune system can attack and kill the parasitic organisms.

Tinidazole is chemically similar to metronidazole (Flagyl) but can act faster. Tinidazole is not an antibiotic. It is not effective against viral or fungal infections either.

Tinidazole is primarily prescribed to treat infections caused by parasitic protozoa such as giardiasis and amebiasis. In some cases this drug may be prescribed to treat certain types of vaginal infections caused by bacteria such as vaginosis and trichomoniasis.

Tinidazole is only prescribed following a lab test to determine the type of infection causing organism.
