This drug is used to treat occasional sleepiness and reduce the difficulty when one is trying to fall asleep. The generic name for Unisom is Doxylamine.

How it works

Doxylamine is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are drugs that oppose the activity of histamine receptors in your body.

Doxylamine works by depressing your central nervous system to produce drowsiness. The brain cells that are concerned with wakefulness are the ones that tend to release histamine, so by blocking the activity of histamine receptors, the drug makes you feel sleepy. Histamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain.

Unisom is used to treat insomnia, short term. It aids sleep and is often used by patients that cannot fall asleep. Doxylamine is also commonly used for the treatment of a runny nose, sneezing, skin rash and other allergy symptoms.

The adult dose for insomnia is; 25 mg one a day, daily, at least 30 minutes before you go to bed.

The duration of this should not exceed 2 weeks.

The pediatric dose for insomnia is; for those that are 12 years or older, 25 mg orally, daily, 30 minutes before you go to bed.
